Meet Dr. Carine Smit
Dr. Carine Smit is a dedicated and compassionate Paediatrician based in the serene Lowveld region. With a medical journey that began at the University of Pretoria in 2009 and flourished at the University of Stellenbosch, Dr. Smit brings a wealth of experience and expertise to her community.
Dr. Smit achieved her MBChB in 2009 at the University of Pretoria, and subsequently earned her FCPead MMed (Pead) at the University of Stellenbosch in 2017. Her formative years of public service and formal paediatric training unfolded in Stellenbosch, with her internship at the Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town.
In 2019, Dr. Smit and her family made the heartfelt decision to leave the bustling Mother City for the tranquil embrace of the Lowveld. Here, she practices as a General Paediatrician, with a profound focus on Pulmonology, Allergology, neonatology and critical care.
As part of her compassionate approach to healthcare, Dr. Smit attained a diploma in Allergies. This accomplishment enhances her expertise but also position her as the sole registered Allergy Doctor in the Lowveld, recognised by the Allergy Foundation of South Africa (AFSA). Driven by her commitment to providing the best possible care, Dr. Smit seeks to contribute significantly to the well-being of her community through her specialised knowledge and genuine compassion.
Dr. Carine Smit, a mother of three beautiful children, channels all her love and energy into her family. Beyond the confines of her home, she directs her boundless passion for children towards her patients at ProPaeds. It is her heartfelt mission to ensure the provision of the best possible medical care at all times. This unique blend of personal warmth and professional commitment defines Dr. Smit’s approach to paediatric healthcare, as she strives to create a nurturing and compassionate environment for both her own family and those under her care at ProPaeds.
Meet Dr. Emilie Erasmus
Dr Emilie Erasmus is a distinguished and loving paediatrician who received world-class training and experience from some of the top institutions in South Africa. Graduating with an MBChB (Cum Laude) from the University of Pretoria, academic honorary colours and a string of distinctions across various disciplines, she embarked on a mission to make a difference in paediatric healthcare.
Her career began as a phlebotomist at AMPATH, Montana Hospital where she honed her skills in patient care and general branch administration. Dr Erasmus then transitioned into medical internships at renowned institutions including Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, earning the Intern of the Year award in 2014. Over the years, she held positions as a Medical Officer at various hospitals including Kalafong Provincial Tertiary Hospital, Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, and Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, gaining valuable experience in paediatric and intensive care.
Driven by a passion for learning and paediatric medicine, Dr Erasmus pursued further education and training, obtaining diplomas in HIV and Child Health, as well as completing the Fellowship of the College of Paediatricians of South Africa. Her dedication to research is evidenced by her MMED thesis on “Clinical Presentations, Genotypic Spectrum, and Outcomes of Children with Primary Hyperoxaluria at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.”
Beyond her clinical roles, Dr Erasmus is a lifelong learner, continually enhancing her skills through specialised courses such as Neonatal Resuscitation, ACLS, ATLS and APLS. She is a member of recognised professional organisations including SAPA and PPS, further enriching her network and knowledge base in paediatric healthcare.
Now, as part of the ProPaeds Paediatrics practice, Dr Erasmus continues her journey of compassionate care, enriching the lives of children and families in the Lowveld alongside Dr Carine Smit.

Front Desk Coordinator
Mena van Dyk joined our practice in March 2014 as the Receptionist and is proficiently trilingual in Afrikaans, English, and Portuguese. Her genuine love for working with people aligns with her mission to ensure seamless appointment management.
Mena holds a special affection for children, making her role at our paediatric practice particularly rewarding.

Jenise de Bruin, our Accounts and Credit Controller, became part of our team in June 2019. Guided by the belief that “The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.”
She considers it a profound blessing to collaborate with two exceptional doctors. Recognising the impactful difference they make in the lives of children, Jenise feels honoured to contribute to such a triumphant team.
Thobile Shongwe
Office All-Rounder
Thobile Shongwe has been an integral part of our practice since 2007, performing a myriad of tasks ranging from filing to cleaning offices and assisting in the kitchen. Her thorough enjoyment of her work reflects in her dedication to maintaining a well-rounded and efficient office environment.
